Physical and Mental Health

Topic of the Week: Health

Lean people rack up more than two and a half hours of additional daily movement than their overweight peers, a study showed. That means they can zap up to 350 extra calories a day on top of their daily exercise. "The calories we burn puttering around are far more important for weight maintenance than we ever imagined," says study author James Levine, M.D., Ph.D. Here's how it all adds up.

Suggested Reading: 'Half The Sky' by Nicholas D./Wundunn Kristof

Synposis:

This book expose the most pervasive human rights violation of our era...the oppression of women in the developing world and it tell us what we can do to help.

An old Chinese proverb says "Women hold up half the sky." Then why do women of Africa and Asia persistently suffer human rights abuses? Continuing their focus on humanitarian issues, journalist Nicholar Kristof and Sheryl WunDunn take us to Africa and Asia, where many women live in profoundly dire circumstances and some succeed against all odds.

A Cambodian teenager is sold into sex slavery; a formerly illiterate women becomes a surgeon in Addis Abada. An Ethopian women is left for dead after a difficult birth; a gang rape victim galvanizes the international community and creates schools in Pakistan. An Afghan wife is beaten by her husband and mother-in-law; a former Peace Corps volunteer founds an organization that educates and campaigns for women's rights in Senegal.

Through their powerful true stories, the authors show that the key to progress lies in unleashing women's potential, that change is possible, and that each of us can play a role in making it happen.

JOI-ctionary:

GRAV comes from the Latin word meaning "heavy, weighty, serious." Thus, a grave matter is serious and important.

  • gravid/'gra-ved/ Pregnant or enlarged with something.

Gravid implies weight and bulk, but actually describes a pregnant female even at an early stage of her pregnancy. It has the related inflation that results from any cause and that will lead to a change of some kind. Thus, a writer may be gravid with ideas as she sits down to write; a speaker may make a gravid pause before announcing his remarkable findings; and a cloud may be gravid with rain.

  • gravitas /'gra-ve-tas'/ Great or very dignified seriousness.

The head if the committee never failed to carry herself with the gravitas she felt was appropriate to her office. Among the Romans, gravitas was thought to be essential to the character and functions of any adult (male) in authority. Even the head of a household or a low-level official would strive for this important quality. We use gravitas today to identify the same solemn dignity in men and women.

One common word we already know is gravity- Weighty importance, seriousness, or dignity.
